2010 Torch Relay Hit Harrison |
|
Angela and Scott decided to take in the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay ceremonies in Harrison Hot Springs February 8th. The ceremonies included a few words from Mayor Ken Becotte, entertainment from the Harrison Highlanders Pipe Band followed by local First Nations dancers, singers and drummers. Local MLA Barry Penner was on-hand as well to witness the event and shake hands and speak with members of the gathering. The empty Friendship Circle filled up rather quickly as the Torch drew near. A nervous young lady dressed in Olympic atire stood alone clutching her torch in hand, waiting patiently for the flame to ignite it and allow her to continue the journey that will see the flame travel to Vancouver and ignite the Olympic cauldron signifying the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

First to arrive were the Sponsorship vehicles (thank you Coke Cola and RBC) which carried excited dancers and announcers. A black Zamboni (decorated to advertise the new Coke Zero), parked near the Friendship Circle, was surrounded by the crowd as volunteers were handing out free Coke Cola flags and sample size bottles of Coke Zero (yes I did get my sample size Coke Zero). The torch finally arrived with great fanfare as a cheering audience showed its Canadian Pride. The nervous young lady showed a smile as the carrier of the flame walked into the Friendship Circle. The torches were brought together (photo op) as the crowd continued to cheer. The flame was passed on. The nervous young lady was aglow as now it was her turn to continue the journey.
Then everyone left and we went to the Memorial Hall to eat cake and drink hot chocolate.
